June 22, 2020 Welcome back! I am finally back to blogging after my surgery. I broke my right humerus into three pieces. On Memorial Day , I was operated on to repair my right shoulder. The surgeon thought that he might need to replace my shoulder joint. Luckily, he was able to use metal plates and screws to repair the damage. The surgery was approximately three to four hours. I also spent a couple of hours in recovery. After the surgery, I was allowed to go home on the same day.
I had received a nerve block prior to the surgery. This kept the pain at bay for the first few hours after the surgery. By that night, I began to feel the pain. I received pain medication to take every four hours. Even after taking the pain medicine , I was still in pain. Any movement would cause pain. My arm was immobilized by a brace that Velcro’s my arm to my body. I experienced a lot of swelling in my arm and hand. My hand was so swollen that I could not make a fist.
After the first two weeks, I was able to have my post operation appointment. I also learned that I had received 33 staples. At that time they removed my staples, and applied sterile strips.
Currently, I am no longer on pain medicine. I still have pain , but it is manageable with Tylenol . In one more week, I will see the surgeon again. I will hopefully be able to get rid of the brace at that time. I will then begin the long road to rehabilitation.
Thank you for your patience during the time that I was unable to post a blog. I also wish to thank my son and daughter-in-law for taking such great care of me. They continue to pick up my medicine, groceries, and anything that I need. They also take me to my doctor appointments. I would not have been able to make it without their love and support. Finally, I want to also thank other family and friends that have been so supportive.
I have included the last three photos of what the shoulder looks like after surgery.
