What is self-care?

The dictionary defines it as: “…the practice of taking an active role of protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our health. Although it seems to be a simple concept, it is something that we often overlook.

There are five different types of self-care: physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual and professional care.

  • Physical self-care. …

  • Spiritual self-care. …
  • Professional self-care.

Why is self care important?

Self-care encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself, and this allows you to transfer the good feelings to others. You cannot give to others what you do not have yourself. Oprah Winfrey describes it as: “…fill(ing) your cup…until it runneth over!….”. One of Oprah’s fifty main rules specifies to ”…find your core self.” In other words, you cannot follow your goals or purpose until you understand your core self. Self care is especially important for those with stressful jobs -like social workers, nurses and teachers.

How can we self-care?

Each one of us should gather skills/elements that help us create a self-care package. Our self-care package should contain elements of a healthy lifestyle. Your package will be full of helpful tips and techniques that help you lead a healthy lifestyle.

What are some recommended self-care tips?

  1. Establish a morning self-care routine. …
  2. Reward yourself. …
  3. Speak with a therapist. …
  4. Schedule days off. …
  5. Automate what you can. …
  6. Get plenty of sleep. …
  7. Reflect on the three best things that happened today. …
  8. Use positive language and self-talk.

You probably already have an established self-care routine. Remember that as we grow and mature each year, we may wish to update our self-care routines. I encourage you to experiment with new tips that you can adopt into your self-care package. Have fun and pamper yourself!
