Welcome to another beautiful sunny day in Southern California! Today I am inspired to tell you about one of my favorite places to go on vacation. It is the famous Coronado Island at San Diego, California.
Coronado Bay Bridge at Coronado, California
Coronado is a California resort city on a peninsula in San Diego Bay. It is known for the grand Victorian Hotel del Coronado, Across from the hotel, the famous Coronado Beach attracts surfers and sunbathers.
The Hotel Del Coronado at Coronado, California
The Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888. i It has always had the ability to attract Hollywood “royalty” as well as its newest superstars. In the 1970s and 1980s, The Del played host to mega-celebrities such as Cary Grant,Katherine Hepburn, and Burt Lancaster, as well as Goldie Hawn, Sylvester Stallone, and Renee Russo. The historic hotel just celebrated its 130th anniversary on February 19,
Marilyn Monroe during the filming of ”Some Like it Hot,“ in 1958 at the Hotel Del Coronad- San Diego, California.
Gina Petrone is proud to hold the title of Hotel del Coronado’s historian. One of her favorite historic stories (learned from a past server) was what happened during the 1958 filming of “Some Like It Hot” at the Hotel Del. She recounts: “…when Billy Wilder went to shoot a scene with Marilyn getting out of a bus in front of the hotel he realized that he didn’t recognize anyone on the front porch. Somehow locals got on set and took over where the actors were supposed to stand.” Petrine also shared that: ”Marilyn Monroe needed her favorite dessert made especially for her daily. It was a chilled vanilla soufflé with merengue on top.”
The historian continued: “When the hotel first opened we had what was called the American Plan, which meant all of your meals were included,” she says. “Room rates started at $2 to $2.50 per day, and guests attending a special dinner in the Crown Room in 1893 could enjoy a pint of Veuve Clicquot for just $2.50. Also, the resort once had a separate dining room and a separate entrance for single women.”
She also likes to recount the story of the world’s most infamous ghost who is said to live in room 3327. According to the hotel’s history: “A woman named Kate Morgan stayed here in 1892 and kept asking for her brother,” says Petrone. “A few days later she shot herself, and no one claimed the body, so she got the name Beautiful Stranger. To this day people still report sightings. In fact, a man a couple of months ago asked to be moved when his suitcase contents were strewn about the room while he was in the bathroom.”
